Public meeting on Wellington Road methadone clinic proposal set for February

Our London

Although one councillor was asking for wider, and faster, notification of the public, council has settled upon a date for the public to share its views on the latest proposed methadone clinic.

During the council meeting on Tuesday (Jan. 15), it was decided a special meeting of the Planning and Environment Committee will take place at Centennial Hall on Tuesday, Feb. 19. The purpose of the meeting, set to begin at 7 p.m., is to allow the public to make submissions regarding the proposed methadone clinic at 527 Wellington Rd. S.

Ward 12 Councillor Harold Usher expressed concern when it was stated the city report on the proposal would be ready only eight days before that meeting. Usher said he has been receiving “a lot of calls on this” and wondered why the meeting date was so far away when a sign stating the possible zoning change of the property has already been posted for some time.

John Fleming, managing director of planning, said that although there has already been “some extra process” around this proposal — referring to a public meeting called by the applicant back on Oct. 18 — but that staff was following the typical procedure around notification.

Ward 11 Councillor Denise Brown, no stranger to the public consultation process around methadone clinic proposals after council agreed to a third dispensary in her riding late last year, supported the idea of staff giving thought to increasing the notification period.

The discussions also brought forward a question from Ward 2 Councillor Bill Armstrong who asked about the status of a previous council decision to request the province consider allowing all pharmacies in Ontario be allowed to dispense methadone.

Mayor Joe Fontana stated the request had been made, but that the city is still waiting to hear back from the provincial government.
