New legal aid program in London to help expedite cases

Our London

There’s a new service for low-income London residents facing criminal charges.

Legal Aid Ontario’s resolution duty counsel lawyer service will allow “appropriate cases” to be settled outside the courtroom through face-to-face meetings with Crown attorneys.

Through the service, senior legal aid lawyers, based at the London courthouse at 80 Dundas St., can meet and settle appropriate cases outside the courtroom.

Resolution duty counsel lawyers meet with eligible accused persons and then approach the Crown to discuss the case before they appear in court.

“Earlier resolution of cases allows clients to move forward with their matter and avoid returning to court multiple times,” a press release states. “It also saves court resources and taxpayer dollars.”

Assisting more than one million people each year, duty counsel services are available in most courthouses in Ontario, including more than 28 remote and fly-in locations.
