Four of the Forest City’s largest employers also happen to have been named to a list of Canada’s Top 100 Employers for 2014.

The list, which was released on Monday (Oct. 21), includes 3M Canada, EllisDon Corporation, Labatt Breweries of Canada and Western University. The Canada’s Top 100 Employers project is a national competition to determine which employers lead their industries in offering exceptional workplaces for their employees.

The editors of Mediacorp, the nation’s largest publisher of employment-related periodicals and online directories, choose the list based on eight specific criteria points. Those points include physical workplace; work atmosphere and social; health, financial and family benefits; vacation and time off; employee communications; performance management; training and skills development; and community involvement.

Although this is the 15th year of the Top 100 list, it is the first year Labatt has entered the competition. Reasons for the brewery’s inclusion in the list include a head office where employees can take advantage of various onsite amenities, including a nap room for employees who need a quick rest, fitness facility and employee lounge stocked with video games, pool table, foosball and board games. The company also offers “great financial benefits,” including signing bonuses for some, year-end bonuses for all and contributions to a defined contribution pension plan.

“Labatt is extremely honoured to be named as one of Canada's Top 100 Employers for 2014,”  said Agostino De Gasperis, vice-president of people, Labatt Breweries of Canada. “This is a tribute to the thousands of men and women who have made Labatt one of Canada’s great success stories. It takes high quality people to make high quality beer and build a high quality company.”

Details in the report point to some of the reasons why 3M Canada for inclusion in the list, including a “unique head office” that features a variety on onsite amenities including a fitness facility with free membership and an employee lounge with fireplace, television and table tennis. In addition, employees start with three weeks of paid vacation and enjoy additional time off during the Christmas holidays.

“At 3M Canada, we are proud to be recognized as a Top 100 Employer for 2014,” said Paul Madden, president and general manager, 3M Canada. “Our employees are the lifeblood of our company. 3Mers are experts at solving problems and serving our customers, and we know providing a great place for them to work and keeping them engaged ensures the continued success of 3M Canada.”

Western employs more than 13,000 people and receives more than 32,000 applications each year. The jobs available range from part-time jobs in food services that suit student employees, to professional positions allowing life-long opportunities for skills development and career growth.

Reasons for Western’s ranking include the encouragement of employees and faculty to keep fit with subsidized memberships to the 160,000 square-foot recreation centre and, with a focus on the longer term, new employees can participate in free retirement planning sessions and receive contributions to a defined contribution pension plan.

Amit Chakma, Western’s president, expressed his thanks to all those who contributed to making the university one of Canada’s top employers.

“Our faculty and staff deserve the credit for this honour,” Chakma said. “One of the most attractive things about working at Western is the opportunity to work with the best, and be a part of teams that provide a high quality global education and conduct research that has impact around the world.”

The inclusion of EllisDon was pushed through the company’s encouragement of employees to balance work and their personal life with alternative work arrangements such as flexible work hours, shortened work week option, telecommuting and reduced summer hours.

In addition, the EllisDon provides a range of great financial benefits, including profit-sharing and a share purchase plan available to all employees, contributions to a defined contribution pension plan and the encouragement of employees to give back to the community by providing paid time off to volunteer with local charitable organizations.
