Influenza activity in the London area is on the rise, states the latest report from the Middlesex-London Health Unit released today.
The health unit said this may be due to increased testing and a corresponding increase in the detection of illness, or it may reflect a true rise in the number of influenza infections occurring in the community.
From Jan. 18 to 24, 28 laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza A and one case of influenza B were reported. Among these cases, there were 11 hospitalizations and one death reported.
Since Sept. 1, 2014, there has been a total of 122 laboratory-confirmed influenza A cases and one influenza B case reported, 45 of whom have been hospitalized, and five of whom have died.
In addition, three laboratory-confirmed influenza A outbreaks were declared last week, bringing to 20 the total number of influenza outbreaks declared in Middlesex-London facilities since Sept. 1.
