A former London bouncer has become the talk of the Internet after posting a video he shot two years ago manning the club’s front door on New Year’s Eve, earning him over 2 million views in just five days.
Peter Williams had been working as a bouncer at Gatsby Sound House & Bar when he decided to strap a Go-Pro camera to his jacket.
The result? A nine-minute video posted to YouTube in the early morning hours of Jan. 1 of this year, showing the very best of the worst party-goers he encountered that night.
“I had just gotten the camera for Christmas a few days earlier, and it was around the time body cams on police officers had become a thing,” he explained. “I never put it on thinking — hey I want to embarrass these drunk people, I wore the camera to protect myself.”
This year, Williams decided to post the video after showing it to family and friends in hopes of garnering a chuckle or two. What he never expected was that he would soon be the topic of numerous websites, interview and radio shows, all clamouring to talk to the man behind the camera.
“I had no idea it would blow up like this,” he said with a laugh, adding the video has even been getting comments from people all around the world. “Most are saying stuff like ‘this bouncer has the patience of a saint,’ and they respect the job I did that night. That makes me feel great, especially with that kind of a job that’s usually thankless, it’s great to get that kind of recognition.”
Regardless of his newfound fame, Williams is hoping those watching the video get more out of it than just a few laughs.
“Bouncers don’t have the best image, so I kind of wanted to show what a bouncer goes through on a busy night like that,” he said. “I hope that people, including the ones in the video, learn to be a little more responsible, always have backup money for a cab and don’t lose your coat check ticket.”
