Most hypnotists, on interviewing a new client will ask the client what he or she thinks hypnosis is. Replies range from sleep, to unconsciousness, to surrender of mental powers and control, to magic, to voodoo; all are in error.

What it actually is, is the hypnotherapist and client working together to overcome an issue at hand. Whether it’s a fear, an addiction or even stress management. You are always in control; the hypnotherapist never has control over you. It is safe, healthy and natural!

Below are some answers to commonly asked questions by Gilles Bernard from The London Hypnotherapy Centre.

Will hypnosis work on me?

Since hypnosis is a natural state of mind everyone not only has the ability to go into it but it actually happens at various times throughout a typical day without even realizing it. A regular day dream or ‘zoning out’ are all forms of hypnotism. The hypnotherapist is there to guide you into that state of mind.

How much will it cost?

The cost will vary depending on the issue at hand. Most often the hypnotherapist can arrange a package for those needing more than one session.

How long will it take?

Each individual session will last from 45 to 90 minutes. The number of sessions needed varies for each particular issue. Smoking, for example, can be remedied within the first session but may take two to three. More severe issues can take up seven sessions.

Is it safe?

Hypnosis is completely safe; you are in complete control at all times and can terminate the hypnotic state at any time. The hypnotherapist never has control over you.

Should I be nervous?

No, there is nothing to be nervous about. The life you have desired is at your doorstep.

Will I remember everything that happens in the session?

In a hypnotic state you will remember just as if you were in a normal state of mind, if not better. Hypnosis is a heightened state of awareness.

What will the experience be like?

Your first visit with your hypnotherapist will be primarily exploratory. You will learn about hypnotism and become comfortable with it. Your hypnotist will discuss your interests and your desires to determine if hypnosis can accomplish what you want to achieve. From there your hypnotherapist will give you some small tests to determine your type of suggestibility; which helps your hypnotherapist adapt to you as an individual. So they can design a program personalized for you to ensure full achievement.
