When you think about the dentist's office, you probably picture regular cleanings, cavities, root canals and whitening.  But your dentist can also help you with snoring, grinding your teeth or clenching your jaw in your sleep, and to help protect your teeth while you are involved in sports or other physical activity.

Snoring can be caused by a variety of reasons, including being overweight, obstructive sleep apnea, alcohol consumption, or by certain sleep aids or sedatives.  What you probably didn't know is that your dentist can help you stop snoring.  A dentist can make mandibular advancement device (MAD) for you.  The MAD is a specially designed dental device to be worn at night as it gently helps keep the lower jaw in a forward position, increasing the space between the airway passage, helping you breathe better and get a full, quiet night's sleep.

Some people clench their jaws at night, leading to pain in the morning.  Others grind their teeth, which can create a terrible noise for your partner to try to sleep through and can also start wearing away at the enamel of the teeth.  If this is something that you do, it's time to schedule an appointment with your dentist.  They can create an appliance for you to wear while you sleep that will prevent you from clenching your jaw or grinding your teeth.

If you are involved in sports, especially those that involve contact, it's important to wear a mouthguard.  Mouthguards will help protect your teeth, mouth and jaw from injury.  Even if you enjoy activities like golf, cycling, running, tennis or baseball, a mouthguard will protect you in case of an accident, fall or wayward ball.

All of these appliances are available from Southwood Dental Studio.  Dr. Sanjay Agrawal will create custom made appliances suited for your mouth.  Meet with him to discuss your needs and he will help you decide what type of appliance will work best for you.

Southwood Dental Studio is located at 3010 Colonel Talbot Rd., Unit 3 in London.  For more information, call (519) 652-7077 or visit
