The Ontario Hockey League announced Monday (April 30) that London Knights’ rookie defenceman Olli Maatta has been named the player of the week after scoring three goals and two assists in two games.
Maatta helped the Knights’ win their final two games of the OHL Western Conference championship over the Kitchener Rangers to capture the team’s fourth Wayne Gretzky Trophy and first Western Conference title since 2006.
In game three of the best-of-seven series, held Tuesday (April 24), Maatta scored two goals just 22 seconds apart to lead London to a 5-2 victory. In game four, Wednesday (April 25), the 17-year-old opened the scoring with a shorthanded marker and helped with two assists.
Maatta is tied on the Knights’ as the clubs highest producing player in the current playoffs with 19 points in 14 games.
The Finn native recorded five goals and 27 assists in his first season in the OHL.
Eligible for the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Maatta was listed at eighth overall by NHL Central Scouting in their final North American Rankings.
