Thunderwolves out pace Mustangs in back-to-back pairings

Our London

The struggle to find success continues for the Western University men’s basketball squad.

Hosting a double-header weekend against the Lakehead University Thunderwolves, the Western Mustangs were looking to end a loosing streak that stretched back to Nov. 23. That is when the team managed to put together what has since proved to be their only win so far this season, an 81-72 decision over the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.

Taking to the floor of Alumni Hall on Friday night (Jan. 18) for the first of the two-game pairing, Western looked like they might have been on the way to breaking that streak after some solid shooting by the Mustangs had them leading 31-24 at the half. Unable to keep the Thunderwolves offence caged up while their own shooting percentages started to drop after the intermission, it would be the Western squad ending up going down to a 62-55 defeat. London native Peter Scholtes would be the bright light on the Mustangs roster in this game, registering a season high, 21 points.

Saturday’s (Jan. 19) contest between the two teams would be much the same as the night before. Tied 18-18 at the end of the first and trailing only by three at the half — 36-33, Western just didn’t have the legs to keep pace with Lakehead, dropping their 12th game of the season, this time by a final score of 90-52.

Greg Morrow found himself at the top of the Mustangs scoring for this contest with 16 points, followed by Charlie Drouin at 10 points.

The Western men have four days to regroup before their next game Wednesday night when they trek down the road to St. Catharines for a date with the Brock University Badgers.
