It most certainly won’t go into the annals as one of their best games ever, but the Western Mustangs will nonetheless still be advancing to the next round of the Ontario University Athletics football playoffs thanks to a 25-10 quarterfinal win over the Laurier Golden Hawks on Nov. 1.
Taking to the field of TD Stadium with backup quarterback Stevenson Bone calling the shots, many may had been expecting a repeat performance of the last outing between these two squads in which Western ran roughshod over the Golden Hawks, posting a 61-20 win.
Laurier, on the other hand, had other ideas and were quick to challenge that assertion, getting out to an early 10-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Unfortunately for the Golden Hawks, that would be all the offensive punch they could muster as the Mustangs picked away at that lead for the next 45 minutes of play to earn a trip to semi-finals with the victory.
Second-year receiver Matt McDougall led Western with four catches for 79 yards while running back Yannick Harou got the bulk of the carries, running the ball 22 times for 162 yards and recording Western’s lone touchdown of the afternoon.
The Mustangs will now face Guelph University on the Gryphons home turf at Alumni Field on Saturday Nov. 8.
